In our strategy of equipping national pastors and evangelists to carry
on the work of the church, we are able to identify leaders in specific
areas who need further training. This project enables us to send men to
various Lutheran institutions to increase their learning and understanding
in order to help the local church grow. These places include:
1. Matango Theological Seminary, Kenya – This was established
many years ago by Swedish missionaries in
Western Kenya and is used by the Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Kenya to train their pastors. The staff is made
up of Swedish missionaries, Kenya pastors, and visiting theologians, often
from the United States. Currently, this is a four-year program, but there
are plans to expand it to make it a degree program.
2. Kapenguria Bible School, Kenya – This is a program established
by Norwegian missionaries to train evangelists for the Lutheran church.
Some of the teaching is done in Swahili which is more helpful for Kenyans,
but can be a problem for students from Sudan or other places.
3. Atemo Bible School, Kenya – This is a 2-year program to train
evangelists in the Lutheran Church, run by the ELCK. The teaching is done
in English.
4. The seminary in Tanzania – Four students are finishing their
last year.
5. Nekempta Seminary in Ethiopia – We are sponsoring students at
a school run by Mekane Yesus.
Prayer needs: Pray for wisdom in deciding scholarship recipients and for
their future work in the church. Pray for the students to do well in learning
about the Bible and doctrine to be equipped for leadership and sharing
the Gospel. Pray for the schools, that they may continue to be supported
and staffed well.
